Zirconia Dental Implants
Different materials used for dental implants
Most dental implants available commercially are made of titanium.
“Premium” dental implant brands are made from commercially pure titanium, whereas traditional brands use a titanium alloy (Ti‑6Al‑4V) and include other materials such as aluminum and vanadium.
At 47VH, we mainly use premium dental implants made from commercially pure titanium.
Titanium has special properties that allow bone cells to attach—this is the process of osseointegration. This enables the implant to be firmly anchored in the jaw and to withstand the significant forces required for chewing.
Titanium is a biocompatible material, meaning it is well accepted by the body. It does not corrode and does not provoke an immune reaction in the body—except in rare cases of allergies. It is not rejected by the body.
Zirconia dental implants: an alternative?
Zirconia is another material option for manufacturing dental implants.
Manufacturers design zirconia implants from zirconium oxide ceramic.
Like titanium, zirconia supports osseointegration: bone cells firmly attach to it, allowing the implant to anchor durably in the jaw. Thanks to this fixation, the implant can bear the large forces generated by chewing.
This material is also biocompatible: the human body naturally accepts it. It neither corrodes nor triggers an immune response, and the body does not reject it.
Moreover, zirconia offers several additional advantages:
-
It does not conduct electricity or heat.
-
Its natural white color integrates better aesthetically.
-
It adheres less to bacteria, which limits plaque accumulation.
-
It provides good gingival adhesion, promoting the health of the gums around the implant.
Thus, zirconia implants represent a real alternative to titanium implants, with better soft tissue behavior in many cases.
When to choose zirconia dental implants?
Zirconia dental implants are an alternative to titanium implants, offering improved soft tissue (gingival) integration, superior biocompatibility and aesthetics, while maintaining similar osseointegration.
They are mainly chosen by patients who want the latest technological advances or who prefer not to have titanium in their bodies.
If you wish, we can propose zirconia dental implants at the 47VH practice.
